Breast cancer radiation linked to heart problems

Recent research has shown a link between breast cancer patients and those who suffer from heart disease. A new study, which is published in the latest edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, found that there is a correlation between breast cancer patients who receive radiation as treatment and a risk of heart problems, according to U.S. News and World Report.

However, the risk is small, and in many cases women and men should not give up radiation treatment.

"Women need to be aware that there is a risk, but the overall risk is still relatively small, and the benefits of radiation in the treatment of breast cancer still outweigh the risks," said Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. Not only is it the second most common form of cancer among women behind skin cancer, but it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer.
